چکیده

Trapped modes in the linearised water-wave problem are free oscillations of an unbounded fluid with a free surface that have finite energy. It is known that such modes may be supported by particular fixed structures, and also by certain freely-floating structures in which case there is, in general, a coupled motion of the fluid and structure; these two types of mode are referred to respectively as sloshing and motion trapped modes, and the corresponding structures are known as sloshing and motion trapping structures. Here a trapped mode is described that shares characteristics with both sloshing and motion modes. These “passive trapped modes” are such that the net force on the structure exerted by the fluid oscillation is zero and so, in the absence of any forcing, the structure does not move even when it is allowed to float freely. In the paper, methods are given for the construction of passive trapping structures, a mechanism for exciting the modes is outlined using frequency-domain analysis, and the existence of the passive trapped modes is confirmed by numerical time-domain simulations of the excitation process.

Trapped modes in the water-wave problem for a freely-floating structure

Trapped modes in the linearized water-wave problem are free oscillations of an unbounded fluid with a free surface that have finite energy; it has been known for some time that such modes are supported by certain structures when held fixed. This paper investigates the problem of a freelyfloating structure that is able to move in response to the hydrodynamic forces acting upon it and it is shown...

Motion trapping structures in the three-dimensional water-wave problem

Trapped modes in the linearized water-wave problem are free oscillations of finite energy in an unbounded fluid with a free surface. It has been known for some time that such modes are supported by certain structures when held fixed, but recently it has been demonstrated that in two dimensions trapped modes are also possible for freely-floating structures that are able to respond to the hydrody...

Trapped modes around freely floating bodies in a two-layer fluid channel.

Unlike the trapping of time-harmonic water waves by fixed obstacles, the oscillation of freely floating structures gives rise to a complex nonlinear spectral problem. Still, through a convenient elimination scheme the system simplifies to a linear spectral problem for a self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space. Under symmetry assumptions on the geometry of the fluid domain, we present condition...

Trapped Modes around Freely Floating Bodies in Two-layer Fluids

We consider the coupled system modeling the interaction of time-harmonic progressive water-waves with an array of three-dimensional freely floating obstacles in a two-layer fluid. Presenting a variational and operator formulation for the problem and a condition guaranteeing the existence of trapped waves, we give a number of examples of floating structures supporting trapped waves. We also stud...

Moving Load Analysis of Submerged Floating Tunnels

The concept of floating submerged tunnels becomes increasingly attractive idea to cross the straits. The structural solution in these bridges includes buoyancy force on tunnel body plus tension in mooring tethers. This paper investigates the effect of submergence on the dynamic response of submerged floating tunnels due to moving load. The inertial effect of the fluid on the submerged structure...
